We arrived in Vegas on Valentine's Day shortly before midnight. Though we were still on EST, we still raged 'til the wee hours of the morning, running into Phish's bassist, Mike Gordon, at the Hard Rock Hotel bar at 4:00 a.m. I convinced Chrissy to say hello to him, and it was a wonderful moment to watch Mike thank her for saying hi. (Coming from the LA show earlier in the evening, he surrounded himself with lovely ladies all night long.) Continuing the feeling of feeling like a fellow rock star, Marcus rented a vintage 1959 Caddy for the day on Sunday. The classic auto claims "the largest fins" ever created. Marcus was kind enough to let me take her for a whirl; I drove it around the block a few times, trying to look cool while trying not to crash into anything. The Cornwells pose in the machine below. |

| Marcus's '59 Caddy was pimped out, but I also liked Laura's cute 2-seater that she rolled up to Vegas with. It was great for the two Southern California girls to join us in Nevada, and it was a cool to share in the groove with some new cats. On top of that, Jordan's friends from Tahoe, J.P. and Chad, also joined us for their first Phish shows at Vegas. It was refreshing to get a new perspective of Phish from some folks who haven't seen scores of shows before. Chad, for example, couldn't get over how good the Guyute was from Sunday's show. He didn't care that they had played it a few shows earlier. It was a sick performance, and that's what he noticed. I loved it, too. (And I'm not afraid to admit it.) |

The good times in Vegas continued throughout the weekend. Sunday night's Phish show was not nearly as impressive as Saturday's, but it was still fun. We had a great crew with great seats (the same section both nights), and I personally was a big fan of the Down With Disease reprises throughout the show. Like a cheap Vegas hooker, the show was full of Disease. Whoa, that was gross, sorry. The Piper reminded me of the end of the hiatus (it was the first song Phish played after the hiatus), except that this version was even better. Unfortunately, the last song of the weekend, the stand-alone encore of Friday, had some of us feeling a bit down. Jordan, for one, could not get past it. Oh well. Below left, Marcus shows the face that led to him walking out of Saturday night's show, alone, all the way back to the strip, where he found himself hallucinating and winning more than a grand on the high-stakes blackjack tables. Chrissy and Kyle, below center, demonstrate the subtleties of their long-term relationship. Beth, below right, just soaks it all in, smiling at the ridiculousness of our friends, unaware of the surprise in store. (Only two pictures were used to create the four images below.) |

An hour or two each day in Las Vegas was spent waiting outside the Thomas & Mack to position myself and my crew for good seats. (The general admission nature of the venue called for us to wait in awfully long lines.) Below, I take a photo of the line of beers under the fool moon while waiting for admission. |

| At about 6:30 a.m., me, Marcus, Beth, John, Chrissy, and Kyle hit up the Luxor restaurant for some dinner, or breakfast, or brinner as I called it. Walking into the restaurant we ran into two girls, Dina and Amy, Egyptian sisters visiting Vegas for the Phish shows. Amy lived in LA, Dina lived in the East Village, about two blocks from me and Marcus. After the late-late-late night meal, Marcus poses with the girls before we head out into the morning sun. |
| The tables treated us relatively well. I won about $100 on blackjack, and Chrissy and Kyle had the slot machines lighting up all weekend. Jordan, smartly avoided the gambling scene altogether, instead catching the late-night shows on Saturday and Sunday nights. I wasn't jealous until I heard that Mike Gordon and Dicket Betts joined moe. for a 30-minute In Memory of Elizabeth Reed. |

| The photo below was taken from the second night of Vegas. The folks who made the "871 Days Since Last Ghost" banner the first night altered their message for the second night. Cutting off the "87" made it accurate. |
